What do you do when your child is overweight but eats healthy?
It can be confusing when you see your child eating a variety of healthy foods and preferring fruits and vegetables to sweets and snacks. Isn’t this a certain sign your child is healthy?
So why is your child overweight or larger than other kids who eat more snacks and sugary foods?
With all the attention on childhood obesity, watching your child make healthy food choices but still struggle with their body weight can be confusing.
Should you change their food? Improve their diet? It can be tempting to put a child on a weight loss diet…but please don’t.
Of course, the best approach is to encourage healthy habits that support both physical health and emotional wellbeing (which I include in my forthcoming book Kids Thrive at Every Size – available in August 2024 but you can pre-order now!)
In this video, I’m talking about the genetics of size in children and some ways you can help your child be physically healthy, even though they may be large or overweight.
You’ll learn about:
• The genetic tendency to be large, small, or in-between
• Environmental factors you can control, like food, movement, sleep and screen time
• Why accepting your child at every size is so important
Let me help you better understand why your child may eat healthy but is also overweight.
Eating healthfully is only one way to achieve health, there are other ways, too. Most importantly, accepting your child, no matter their size, will go a long way in helping them feel good about themselves and engage in those lifestyle behaviors and healthy habits we know are helpful.
